A-Line Bag 008
Knitting on the bias is an enjoyable and versatile technique perfect for creating unique handmade bags. This method allows you to utilize ANY type of yarn, whether it’s thin or thick, commercial or handspun, making it ideal for knitters of all levels.
The bag features a stylish flared A-line shape, constructed from four simple stocking stitch pieces—two for the front and two for the back. Its closure consists of a charming garter stitch flap adorned with a large button, providing both functionality and a decorative touch. Additionally, the strap is meticulously knitted and reinforced with tape to prevent any stretching, ensuring your bag remains sturdy and functional.
Finished size of the bag: The completed bag measures 40cm (16in) wide at the base and 20cm (8in) high, not including the handles, making it a practical accessory for everyday use.
Stitches used: This pattern involves several basic knitting techniques, including casting on, knitting, purling, and picking up stitches (refer to diagrams). You'll also learn to increase stitches by knitting into the front and back of a stitch (see diagrams), along with decreasing techniques such as k2tog, k2tog tbl, p2tog, and p2tog tbl (also illustrated in diagrams).
Materials Required: You can choose any yarn that inspires you! For my samples, I utilized a beautiful green aran-weight cotton/silk blend, a rich purple chunky-weight handspun wool, and a vibrant striped bag created with three aran-weight yarns. Be sure to select needles that match your chosen yarn. Additionally, you’ll need a large button to fasten your bag and tape or webbing to line the strap, ensuring durability and comfort.
This bias knitting bag pattern is not only a fantastic project for honing your skills, but it also makes for a delightful handmade gift or a stylish accessory for yourself. Dive into this knitting adventure today and create your own unique bag!
