My friend Diana recently discovered a very old, typewritten shawl pattern, complete with penciled notes and missing its second page, tucked away in her grandmother’s cherished knitting box. This pattern is the original design for a traditional Shetland Hap shawl, a beautiful and timeless piece that Diana's grandmother had lovingly knit multiple times over the years. The language in the original pattern is quite dated, and it features a construction method that doesn't align with the modern use of flexible circular needles. Therefore, Diana asked me to update the shawl pattern so she could knit it herself and share this classic design with fellow knitting enthusiasts around the world.

Like a true traditional Hap, this stunning shawl begins with a garter stitch square, which serves as the foundation for the entire piece. Stitches are then picked up along the sides, transitioning into a modified feather & fan stitch, adding delightful texture and visual interest to the design. Unlike the original pattern, this updated version is worked seamlessly in the round, allowing for a more enjoyable and straightforward knitting experience without the hassle of seaming two flat pieces together. To complete the shawl, a beautifully knit-on border is added sideways to the feather & fan section, providing a polished finish to this intricate wrap.

A vigorous blocking is essential after completing the shawl to truly highlight the intricate textures and structural beauty of this wrap. By following this updated pattern, knitters will not only create a stunning Shetland Hap shawl but will also be preserving a heartfelt family tradition. Dive into the world of knitting today, and let this exquisite shawl pattern inspire your next project!
