Aimee’s Mittens
Introducing Aimee's Mittens – a delightful knitting project named after my niece that celebrates the craftsmanship of Fair Isle pattern knitting. These charming mittens are uniquely designed to be knitted in the round, utilizing three double pointed needles for a seamless finish. This project is particularly special as I will be teaching it in a night class at a local primary school in the breathtaking Shetland Islands this winter – a first for me, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Crafted to fit the adult female hand, these mittens feature an intentionally generous length. This extra length is designed to provide maximum comfort for the wearer, ensuring that the fingers remain unrestricted and cozy during those chilly winter months.
For this project, I used 3.75mm needles along with high-quality double knitting Shetland wool. After washing and blocking, the gauge is an impressive 30 stitches = 10cm and 30 rows = 10cm – perfect for achieving that snug, warm fit we all love in winter accessories.
The wool requirements for Aimee's Mittens include two 25g balls of Jamieson's of Shetland double knitting for the main color, complemented by one ball each for the contrast colors, totaling four balls of wool. The colors used in this stunning design are MC - Eggshell, CC1 - Blossom, and CC2 - Daffodil, creating a beautiful blend that captures the essence of Shetland's vibrant landscapes.
To finish off your mittens, I’ve provided two options for the closures – you can either choose to do a three-needle bind off for a clean edge, or opt for the Kitchener stitch, fondly referred to here as “grafting” the ends together, adding a professional touch to your finished project. Whether you’re an experienced knitter or just starting out, Aimee's Mittens are a fun and rewarding project that will brighten your winter days. Join me in crafting these beautiful mittens and bring a piece of Shetland tradition to your home!
