Alloy Socks
Create your very own handspun socks that are not only durable and resistant to abrasion but also soft and elastic, perfect for everyday wear! This is the author's version of the popular pattern and article titled “Nature’s Nylon: Natural Alternatives for Stronger Socks,” published in the Winter 2022 issue of Spin Off Magazine.
In this cuff-down sock pattern, you will learn to craft a stunning design featuring a heel flap and gusset. The intricate colorwork pattern is achieved through a clever technique of slipping and cabling select stitches, while colors are switched every round. This method makes managing multiple yarn colors much simpler, as you only need to focus on one color at a time. Perfect for knitters looking for a project that combines creativity with functional design!
Materials
Fiber: You'll need 4 oz (113g) of Red Oak Farm 100% Gulf Coast Native wool, in both natural and indigo dyed, alongside 4 oz of Frivolous Ewe 100% Wensleydale roving in a lovely handpainted green. The resulting yarn should be 3-ply with a yardage of 140 (170, 205) yards of Main Color (MC), and 60 (75, 90) yards each of Contrast Colors (CC1, CC2, and CC3). The yarn characteristics will be approximately 1,520 yards per pound (ypp), with a 14 wraps per inch (wpi), falling within a heavy fingering to sport weight category.
Needles: Use Size 2 (2.75 mm) needles. Adjust your needle size as necessary to achieve the correct gauge for your sock pattern.
Notions: Don't forget your stitch markers (m) and a tapestry needle for finishing touches.
Gauge: Aim for 37 stitches and 55 rounds to measure 4 inches in the pattern, blocked for accuracy. This ensures your socks will fit perfectly and maintain their shape over time.
Whether you are an experienced knitter or a beginner eager to learn, this durable, stylish, and comfortable sock pattern will elevate your knitting skills. Enjoy the satisfaction of creating handspun socks that are both functional and beautiful, perfect for gifting or keeping for yourself!
