Amidon Mittens
Explore the warmth and durability of our Two-Color Felted Mittens, complete with a stylish ribbed cuff that is knit after felting. Perfect for winter crafting, these mittens are designed to keep your hands toasty in the freezing temperatures of Vermont. With a focus on functionality and comfort, our pattern incorporates worsted yarn held double for maximum thickness. Alternatively, you can opt for a bulky-weight feltable yarn to achieve the same cozy result.
When knitting these beautiful mittens in the round with two colors using double-pointed needles (DPNs), be sure to maintain the correct float length by holding the floating yarn close to the work at the corners. If you notice a few long floats that feel tight on the inside of the mittens, rest assured that these can be trimmed safely after the felting process is complete. The unique stranded colorwork technique not only adds extra warmth but also ensures that all strands felt together seamlessly, eliminating the chance of tangling while keeping your fingers free to move.
Vermont winters can be incredibly harsh, which is why my husband specifically requested a pair of thick, warm, and durable hand-knit mittens. After careful consideration, I determined that felted mittens would be the perfect solution for enduring the cold – they provide exceptional heat retention and sturdiness. To address the common issue of snugness around the wrists in felted mittens, I incorporated a single row of non-felting stitches to the inside of each mitten. Following the felting process, I added a ribbed cuff that ensures a snug fit, keeping cold air at bay while maintaining comfort.
Select this pattern for your next knitting project and create a pair of delightful, functional felted mittens that are perfect for winter wear. Whether you're a seasoned knitter or just starting out, these mittens will be a rewarding project that results in high-quality, handmade warmth for your hands.
