Annie's Mittens
Originally crafted as part of a heartwarming charity initiative, I was so enamored with these cozy mittens that I felt compelled to share the pattern with you! Every year, our knitting guild dedicates its efforts to knit mittens for an inner-city kindergarten class in the Bronx, NY. The dedicated teacher, Annie, is the daughter of one of our beloved members, which is why we affectionately refer to this philanthropic project as Annie’s Mittens.
This mitten pattern is designed to be both quick and enjoyable, as the yarn is held double throughout the project. Although you’re using a sock-weight yarn, this technique allows for a fast-paced knitting experience, making it perfect for both seasoned knitters and beginners alike. Don’t hesitate to experiment with the pattern repeat in the self-patterning yarn! You can try to align the striping for a uniform look or intentionally mix the colors for a playful twist. Either way, the result is guaranteed to be charming and eye-catching.
For this project, you will need approximately 65 (90, 120, 145, 180) yards [60 (80, 110, 135, 165) meters] of solid 4-ply yarn (Main Color, or MC) and 85 (130, 190, 225, 290) yards [80 (120, 175, 210, 265) meters] of self-patterning sock yarn (Contrast Color, or CC).
The recommended gauge for this pattern is 22 stitches and 30 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) over stocking stitch worked in the round with the yarn held double. Make sure to adjust your needle size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge, ensuring your mittens have the perfect fit and warmth.
These cherished mittens not only provide warmth but also support a noble cause, making them a meaningful addition to your knitting repertoire. Join us in spreading kindness and creativity with Annie’s Mittens!
