Traditionally, ganseys are knitted ‘in the round’, showcasing intricate designs and unique patterns. This particular gansey pattern features a variety of traditional stitches and is adapted for flat knitting, making it accessible for knitters who prefer this technique. The only exception is the neckband, which is knitted in the round. If you want your finished product to closely resemble the seamless look of round knitting, you can achieve this through invisible seaming, especially when the two halves of the gussets are joined via grafting.

For those who prefer not to graft, a simple solution is at hand: cast off the 15 gusset stitches instead of transferring them to a stitch holder and seaming the two halves together. The back and front pieces of this gansey are identical, with the only difference being the addition of three ‘edge stitches’ on either side of the front. These edge stitches create the traditional seam stitch usually found in authentic ganseys and act as the foundation for the armhole gusset.

Similarly, the left and right sleeves are also identical, except for the placement of the edge stitches and gusset positioning: the edge stitches are oriented to the left on the left sleeve and to the right on the right sleeve. This thoughtful design not only showcases traditional knitting techniques but also provides a stunning, cohesive look.

Please note that the yarn recommended for this pattern has been discontinued. However, you can substitute it with New Lanark DK (available at www.newlanarkshop.co.uk), Rowan Tweed, or potentially Wendy Ramsdale DK. Be sure to swatch your yarn choice to ensure perfect gauge for your project!

If you're seeking a stylish, traditional gansey that combines classic techniques with modern accessibility, this knitting pattern is an excellent choice. Dive into the world of gansey knitting, and create a piece that not only honors tradition but also adds a unique touch to your wardrobe!
