Knitting on the bias is a fabulous and accessible technique that opens up a world of creativity, allowing you to create beautiful accessories with ease. This versatile method means you can use ANY YARN to craft either a stylish scarf or a cozy neck warmer, accommodating yarns from thin to thick, and whether they are commercial or handspun. Both pieces are expertly worked in garter stitch, which involves knitting every row, ensuring a textured finish that is delightful to wear. The finished designs feature a frothy seaweed edging for an elegant touch, while the neck warmer includes a convenient button fastening for added style and functionality.
Finished Sizes
The neck warmer measures 37.5cm (15in) long when fastened, making it just the right length for snuggling against your neck. In contrast, the scarf extends to an impressive 150cm (60in) long, providing you with ample length to drape or wrap for warmth and flair.
Stitches Used
This pattern utilizes fundamental stitches such as casting on and garter stitch (knit every row), as well as various decreasing techniques including k2tog, k2tog tbl, and sl1-k2tog-psso (with accompanying diagrams for clarity). Additionally, increasing is achieved by knitting into the front and back of a stitch (with a detailed diagram provided), plus innovative methods such as picking up stitches (also illustrated in a diagram).
Materials
Choose any yarn that inspires you! For example, I crafted the green neck warmer using a combination of two aran-weight yarns: a plush chenille and a soft wool for the ultimate snugness. The gold neck warmer was designed utilizing a luxurious blend of metallic yarn and shimmering ribbon, perfect for special occasions. Meanwhile, the elegant scarf was knitted using two chunky-weight wools, ensuring it’s not only stylish but also warm and comforting. Be sure to have needles that match your chosen yarn gauge for the best results. For the neck warmer, you will also need two 2.5cm (1in) buttons to complete the look.
