Black Beacon Scarf
Discover one of England's most extraordinary landscapes on the east coast with a knitting project inspired by the stunning Orford Ness. This remarkable shingle spit, now a National Trust property, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, famous for its diverse coastal flora and fauna. It also holds historical significance with buildings and unexploded ordnance from its previous use by the Ministry of Defence. Among these structures stands the iconic Black Beacon, a radio navigation tower that holds special memories for me, as it was here that my husband proposed. In honor of this unique location and my cherished memory, I decided to create a beautiful set for him, featuring a cozy hat and an elegant scarf that reflects the hexagonal shape and clapboard architecture of the Black Beacon. The scarf is crafted with care, showcasing alternating half-hexagon shapes, expertly knitted in stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch for added texture and visual interest. This delightful accessory is worked in two halves, which are skillfully grafted together at the center, creating a striking piece that not only keeps you warm but also tells a story. This scarf requires approximately 150g of DK yarn sourced from the Trust’s own flock of Hebridean sheep that graze on the Ness, giving it a unique connection to this breathtaking landscape. Whether you're looking to enhance your personal knitting collection or create a heartfelt gift for someone special, this pattern combines beautiful design with rich history, making it a perfect project for knitters of all levels. Embrace the beauty of England's east coast while indulging your passion for knitting with this exquisite hat and scarf set.
