Blackwood
Introducing Blackwood, a stunning reversible, asymmetric triangular shawl that showcases elongated cable stitches in an eye-catching design. This unique knitting pattern begins with a few stitches, gradually increasing the stitch count as you progress through the project. Worked entirely in garter stitch, Blackwood features an integrated I-cord edging that adds a polished finish to the shawl. The pièce de résistance is the elongated cable stitches, which provide texture and visual interest throughout the piece. To complete the shawl, you'll use an I-cord bind off, and for an extra touch of flair, optional tassels can be added at the edges!
This captivating pattern was inspired by my desire to create a design that truly stands out, even in black yarn. As a passionate knitter, I have a deep admiration for the simplicity and beauty of garter stitch, alongside a fascination for exploring the possibilities of cable work. Blackwood merges these elements into a versatile and stylish accessory, perfect for any knitting enthusiast.
The sample was crafted using 2 skeins of Countess Ablaze The English Gentleman Fingering yarn (50% Bluefaced Leicester, 50% Masham, 450 metres per 100g skein), in the captivating colorway ‘The Black Parade’. This multiple plied, woolly yarn not only holds its shape beautifully but also has a slight grip, ensuring that your stitches remain secure as you work.
If you're opting to use a smooth or slippery yarn for your Blackwood shawl, it may be beneficial to insert a lifeline before you begin the Elongated Cable stitches sections. This will provide an extra layer of security and reassurance, preventing any potential mishaps.
Gauge: 23 sts and 46 rows per 10 cm / 4” in garter stitch worked flat. Ensure you achieve the correct gauge for the perfect fit and drape of your shawl.
Embrace your creativity and elevate your knitting skills with the Blackwood shawl pattern – a must-have for any fiber arts collection. Whether you’re a seasoned knitter or just beginning your knitting journey, this pattern offers a rewarding challenge that will result in a beautiful, functional piece.
