Calumet
Introducing the Calumet Toque, a beautifully textured knitted hat pattern inspired by the charming town of Calumet in Upper Michigan. This design holds personal significance as my mom and uncle spent their childhood in this quaint community in the U.P. When my mom requested a unique hat pattern for my uncle as a special Christmas gift, it was clear that I wanted to pay homage to his roots. The Calumet Toque is characterized by an easy-to-memorize broken rib pattern that seamlessly transitions from the brim to the decreases, making it perfect for both novice and experienced knitters alike.
YARN: This pattern calls for 70 (80, 100, 120) to 150 yards of worsted weight yarn, and I used the delightful Knitters Brewing CO Sock-aholic Brewski for the sample. Feel free to choose your favorite worsted weight yarn to create a personalized toque that matches your style!
NEEDLES: You'll need US 6 and US 8 (4 and 5 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needles, along with US 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles for the crown decreases. Be sure to check your gauge to ensure a perfectly fitting toque.
NOTIONS: Gather your essential tools, including a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers to keep track of your pattern, and a pair of scissors to snip your yarn.
GAUGE: Achieve a gauge of 18 stitches x 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in broken rib using the larger needle after blocking. Adjust your needle sizes as needed to match this gauge for the best results!
SIZE: The Calumet Toque is available in sizes for head circumferences of 14, 16, 18, 20, and 22 inches (46, 51, 56, 61, and 66 cm). This allows for a comfortable fit for a wide range of head sizes, making it a great gift or a cozy treat for yourself!
Embrace the warmth and nostalgia of Calumet with this delightful toque pattern, perfect for chilly days and holiday celebrations. Download the Calumet Toque knitting pattern today and start crafting a piece of wearable art that honors the heritage of Upper Michigan!
