Cartouche Stole

While exploring a variety of Japanese stitch dictionaries, I stumbled upon a captivating pattern that inspired the Cartouche Shawl. Reminiscent of an Egyptian cartouche, I envisioned this stunning design in a rich, vibrant red hue. The original Cartouche Shawl pattern was successfully published in Knitty, Winter 2011, captivating many knitters with its intricate beauty.

Due to popular demand, I created a rectangular version that showcases these exquisite stitch patterns—the Cartouche Stole. This beautiful stole is skillfully worked in two sections, starting with a provisional cast on at the center back. The design features a seamless flow of stitch patterns, which is achieved through the use of transitional charts. These transitional charts are clearly marked and must be followed with added care, as the stitch patterns are expertly altered to create a harmonious transition into the next design.

The pattern provides both written and charted instructions to cater to varied knitting preferences, with the charts located on pages 9-13 and the detailed written instructions on pages 14-19.

Yarn Requirements: For this project, you will need 1,460 (2,281) yards / 1,335 (2,086) meters of merino/wool lace weight yarn, appropriate for achieving a gauge of 8 stitches per inch. Choose a yarn that beautifully complements the intricate stitchwork of this stole.

Sample Yarn: The sample for this pattern was made using Koigu ‘Lace Merino’, which comes in 292 yards/267 meters; 100% merino, and weighs 1.76 oz/50 grams per skein. The size Medium version requires 5 skeins in the shade L3011, ensuring a luxurious feel and stunning drape.
