Cave Cowl and Mitts
“Under a breathtaking swath of Kentucky hills and hollows lies a remarkable limestone labyrinth that forms the heart of Mammoth Cave National Park. This stunning natural wonder features a cave system containing over 330 miles of passages across five distinct levels, though only 12 miles are currently available for public tours. The cave remains as “grand, gloomy, and peculiar” as it was when Steven Bishop, a young slave turned explorer, first described and mapped many of Mammoth’s intriguing passages. Bishop fought for his freedom, which he gained in 1856, but tragically passed away just a year later. His legacy continues to be honored in the park, where his grave rests in the Old Guide’s Cemetery, close to the entrance. This mix of natural beauty and rich history creates a truly captivating experience for visitors.” --NPS
