Ceann cait
I've crafted many hats incorporating owl cables, which happen to be one of my favorite knitting textures. This particular design features an adorable owl created using a combination of intricate cables set against a lovely reverse stocking stitch background. In this project, I experimented with eyelets for the owl's eyes and long ears, hence the charming name, Ceann Cait, which translates to "long-eared owl" in Irish. The yarn I chose for this project was quite a challenge; I only had 70 grams—less than 50 meters! Additionally, there were significant variations in thickness, ranging from very chunky to surprisingly thin. As a result, the stitching may appear a bit wonky in places, adding a unique character to the hat. For this child-sized version, I managed to use just enough yarn, but for those looking to make an adult-sized hat, I recommend adding an extra owl repeat, increasing the number of ribbing rows at the beginning, as well as incorporating a few more rows of reverse stocking stitch before you start decreasing for the crown. With this pattern, you can enjoy the process of knitting while creating a delightful and cozy hat perfect for showcasing your knitting skills. Whether you’re a seasoned knitter or just starting, this owl-themed hat pattern is sure to bring joy and warmth. Plus, it's a perfect addition to any child's winter wardrobe!
