In 2016, Debbie Bliss had the privilege of meeting Yusuf, a 17-year-old Syrian refugee who expressed a desire to learn how to knit because he had a beautiful idea for a special hat. Yusuf’s long and perilous journey began in Damascus when he was just 15 years old. His journey led him to a camp known as The Jungle in Calais, where he faced numerous challenges but also encountered many compassionate volunteers. These individuals, regardless of their nationality, background, or religion, offered him kindness and support, leaving a lasting impression on him.
Inspired by these experiences, Yusuf envisioned a hat that would symbolize unity and hope. He incorporated powerful symbols of peace into his design: the Star of David, the Crescent and Star, and the Cross, resulting in the beautifully crafted Unity Beanie. This striking accessory not only keeps you warm but also represents a powerful message of solidarity and coexistence.
Today, Yusuf is on a promising path, studying English, Maths, and Art and Design, as he looks forward to a bright future. However, it’s essential to remember that many refugees continue to flee war-torn countries, enduring dire conditions and living without hope.
