Chrysanthemum Shawl

Some knitting designs come more easily than others, and I've experienced that firsthand. For weeks, I envisioned a stunning lattice composed of elongated diamonds, each surrounded by a vibrant, contrasting color. However, I struggled to decide the best technique for creating this intricate design. While Fair Isle knitting would have resulted in a beautiful finish, it would have felt too heavy for my liking. On the other hand, intarsia would introduce an overwhelming number of bobbins to manage, making the entire knitting process quite tedious and potentially unpleasant!

Ultimately, I found an innovative solution that maintains the essence of my original vision: a solid stockinette fabric that gives just the impression of the elongated diamonds. To achieve this look, I used a combination of increases and decreases to form individual cells, all surrounded by elegant twisted stitches. The deliberate design of adjacent twisted stitches creates a beautiful ladder effect between the cells, adding texture and visual interest. Once the base fabric is complete, I firmly block it and then enhance the design with contrasting color using surface crochet. As I worked on this embellishing step, I couldn't help but notice how my elongated diamonds took on a floral quality—almost reminiscent of “chrysanthemum” blooms.

This unique design features my lovely Chrysanthemum fabric, transformed into a delicate shawl that is both eye-catching and versatile. It’s pictured here in the soft and luxurious Knit Picks Stroll yarn, making it perfect for any occasion. Whether you're looking to elevate your knitting skills or simply want to add an exquisite accessory to your wardrobe, this shawl pattern is an ideal project for intermediate knitters eager to explore creative techniques.
