Coquihalla Mitts
Discover the beauty and challenge of knitting with our Highway Thru Hell fingerless mitts pattern, inspired by the stunning Cascade Mountains and the famous Coquihalla Highway. Known affectionately by locals as “the Coq,” this iconic highway weaves through awe-inspiring landscapes, connecting the lush coastal rainforest of British Columbia’s Lower Mainland with the sun-kissed desert climate of the interior. Just like its namesake, these mitts blend practicality and style, making them a must-have accessory for chilly weather.
These fingerless mitts are expertly knit from the bottom up, incorporating a well-designed thumb gusset formed by increases that run along the palm. A striking cabled column decorates the center of each mitt, adding a touch of elegance to a functional design. Ideal for both beginners and experienced knitters, this pattern will elevate your knitting skills while providing a cozy addition to your winter wardrobe.
YARN/YARDAGE
To create your Highway Thru Hell mitts, you will need approximately 50-80 grams (120-190 yards) of DK weight yarn. For a beautiful finish, we have used The Plucky Knitter Traveler DK, known for its exquisite texture and color.
TOOLS
Gather your knitting tools, which include 3.5mm (US 4) needles for your preferred method of working in the round, or use the size necessary to achieve gauge. You will also need a cable needle, stitch markers, waste yarn or a stitch holder for the thumb gusset, and a darning needle for finishing touches.
GAUGE
To ensure a proper fit for your mitts, maintain a gauge of 24 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette and 32 stitches per 4 inches in twisted ribbing, unstretched, after blocking.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Upon completion, your fingerless mitts will measure approximately 5½ inches around (unstretched) and 8½ inches long (or 11½ inches for those opting for long mitts), after blocking. With these dimensions, your mitts will provide a snug fit while allowing freedom of movement for your fingers.
Embrace the spirit of adventure and warmth this winter by crafting the Highway Thru Hell fingerless mitts.
