Cormier grille shawl
Introducing the first pattern in my Canadian Art Deco Knits e-book series—a stunning reversible triangular lace shawl that blends artistry with functionality. This exquisite shawl is just the beginning, as I will be releasing a new pattern each month, totaling 12 unique designs that will celebrate the elegance of Canadian Art Deco. You have the flexibility to purchase each pattern individually or grab the entire e-book for a comprehensive collection of stylish knitting patterns.
The shawl features a mesmerizing zig-zag pattern inspired by a decorative metal grille designed by renowned architect Ernest Cormier. This intricate design graces the hall of honour in the Pavilion Roger-Gaudry at the Université de Montréal and beautifully reflects the Art Deco movement. You can choose to knit this piece in either a triangular or rectangular shape, making it a versatile addition to any knitwear collection.
For those interested in materials, the lace weight triangular sample requires approximately 700 yards (640 meters) of top-quality Turtlepurl Yarns Angel Lace in Lothlorien, using about 52 grams from a 100-gram skein. If you're looking to create a smaller fingering weight shawl, you will need about 100 grams of fingering weight yarn (approximately 425 yards or 390 meters). For a larger fingering weight triangular sample, you will use about 700 yards (640 m) of Yvieknits Yarn Sock in the beautiful hue of Pewter, which amounts to roughly 150 grams combined from two 100-gram skeins.
Here’s a fun fact for architecture enthusiasts: Cormier also incorporated this same stunning grille design into the Supreme Court of Canada, showcasing his remarkable talent for blending craftsmanship and artistic vision.
The intricate stitches used in this pattern include knit, purl, yarn over (yo), knit two together (k2tog), slip slip knit (ssk), skip two purl (sk2p), purl two together (p2tog), purl two together through the back loop (p2tog tbl), and slip stitch purl through the back loop (ssp tbl). This variety of stitches will not only enhance your knitting skills but also add texture and elegance to your finished shawl.
