Da Filska Bonnet
Discover the charm of traditional Shetland craftsmanship with our delightful children's frilled bonnet knitting pattern! These bonnets have remained a beloved staple in Shetland culture for generations. I fondly remember my Nan crafting similar bonnets in the 1970s for my sisters and me, showcasing their enduring popularity.
Not only are these bonnets visually appealing, but they also serve a practical purpose. Their snug fit ensures that they stay securely on your child’s head even in the blustery Shetland wind! In this pattern, I've opted for a modern twist by steering away from classic baby colors. Instead, vibrant pastel bands against a striking black background give the bonnet a retro flair reminiscent of the iconic Shetland allover jumpers from the 1940s and 1950s.
This bonnet is designed as a single size that comfortably fits children aged 6 to 18 months. However, you can easily customize the size by using larger or smaller needle sizes to achieve the perfect fit. Just be sure to pay particular attention to the required tension, as my knitting tends to be on the tighter side, ensuring a cozy fit for your little one.
Introducing the Da Filska bonnet—crafted with six stunning colors of Shetland wool sourced from Jamieson and Smith. For this project, you will need two 25g balls for the main color (MC) and one 25g ball for each of the five contrasting colors, making it easy to mix and match according to your style preferences.
The construction of the bonnet involves knitting the brim flat on two needles, while the main body is knitted in the round using three needles with a convenient steek for seamless finishing. This adds a unique touch to the overall design, making your bonnet truly one-of-a-kind.
Whether you’re a seasoned knitter or just starting, this pattern offers an enjoyable experience and a beautiful result. Embrace the heritage and craftsmanship of Shetland knitting with the Da Filska bonnet; it's a perfect project for adding warmth and style to your child’s wardrobe.
