Elfriede Shawl
My family cherished summers spent with my beloved Omi, Elfriede, at her charming cabin on a picturesque, tree-lined lake. The delicate lace pattern integrated into the body of this sideways asymmetrical triangle shawl evokes vivid memories of those serene trees and the joyful moments we shared together. This shawl is dedicated to Elfriede, honoring her spirit and legacy. Unfortunately, today my Omi battles advanced dementia, which has been profoundly challenging for our family. However, I have found great comfort in the rhythmic and meditative process of knitting this shawl. It is my heartfelt wish that you, too, will experience healing and tranquility while creating your very own Elfriede shawl.
**YARN:** For this project, you'll need 4 skeins of Cumbria The Fibre Company yarn, which consists of 60% Merino wool, 30% Masham wool, and 10% Mohair (238 yds / 218 m per 100 g). Alternatively, you can use approximately 952 yds/870 m of any worsted weight yarn that inspires you.
**GAUGE:** When blocking, achieve a gauge of 21 sts x 42 rows to measure 4” / 10 cm in the border stitch pattern. Unblocked, the gauge will be 20 sts x 40 rows to 4” / 10 cm. In the lace stitch pattern, aim for a gauge of 18 sts x 28 rows to 4” / 10 cm when blocked, and 18 sts x 24 rows to 4” / 10 cm when unblocked.
This pattern features fully written instructions, as well as comprehensive charts to guide you throughout your knitting journey, making it accessible for knitters of all skill levels.
Whether you're knitting in remembrance of loved ones or simply seeking a project that brings joy and peace, the Elfriede shawl is the perfect choice. Create lasting memories as you knit, just as I have, and embrace the calming experience that knitting can provide.
