PATTERN NOTES: This delightful and charming knitted elephant is designed to be worked flat in one continuous piece. Its adorable features—including knitted ears and a tail—are thoughtfully sewn on for a polished finish. The unique tusks are created using a simple crocheted chain. While I opted for a classic grey color for my pachyderm, you can express your creativity by choosing any color that speaks to you, making your elephant truly one-of-a-kind.
SKILLS REQUIRED: This pattern is suitable for knitters with a range of skills. You’ll need to be comfortable with casting on, binding off, increasing, decreasing, seaming, filling, and shaping your elephant. Additionally, a basic understanding of chain crocheting will be helpful for creating the cute tusks.
YARN: For the main body color (MC), I recommend using Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss, a soft and cozy yarn made from 100% nylon. You'll need one skein, which offers 109 yards (100 meters) in a 3.5 oz (100 g) package. My example uses the beautiful color SKY. For the complimentary color (CC), you only need a small amount of worsted yarn in grey for the tail, which adds a lovely contrast.
KNITTING NEEDLES: Use a US 6 (4 mm) circular needle for working flat. This needle size is ideal for creating a sturdy yet soft fabric that will hold the stuffing and shape well.
EXTRAS: Gather a few additional supplies, including a yarn needle for ease of seaming, polyester fiber fill for stuffing, and two 5/8" (1.5 cm) buttons for the eyes, which add character to your elephant. You’ll also need a small amount of cotton string for crafting the crocheted chain tusks and a crochet hook for that part. A zipper is optional if you wish to create a hidden pocket, adding even more charm to your knitted creation.
GAUGE: Don’t worry too much about gauge for this project; achieving an exact measurement isn’t crucial for creating your adorable elephant.
FINISHED SIZE: Once you’ve completed your knitting and stuffed your creation, your finished elephant will stand at approximately 10 inches tall (25 cm) and 8 inches wide (20 cm). This size makes it perfect as a cuddly toy or a decorative piece for your home.
