Empty Nets
Years ago, while conducting in-depth research on the fishing industry, I was astounded to discover that several commonly caught fish species were permitted to be harvested before they even reached breeding maturity. This short-sighted practice struck me as profoundly concerning, and unfortunately, the situation in the fishing industry has not seen significant improvement since then.
This stunning shawl is a part of the [Sustain the Sea collection][1], embodying the harsh reality of unsustainable fishing practices—symbolizing empty nets and restless waves. By raising awareness about the plight of our oceans and the critical need for sustainable fishing, we can work together to ensure that future generations will not have to witness such devastation.
Introducing the "Empty Nets" triangular shawl, designed to be worked from side to side and customized to any desired size and yarn thickness. The centerpiece features a simple yet elegant net repeat, complemented by a wave-patterned edging that captures the beauty of ocean waves. All patterning is ingeniously crafted on the right side only, making it a straightforward project for knitters of various skill levels. The unique bind-off edge is intentionally ruffled, representing the enchanting waves breaking gently on the shore.
The sample shawl is created using 120g of heavy laceweight yarn (specifically Zealana Kiwi Laceweight, which provides an impressive 597m/651 yards). While gauge is not critical for this pattern, it's important to ensure that the fabric has a lovely, soft drape for optimal comfort and aesthetics.
Whether you are an avid knitter or a beginner looking to expand your skills, this pattern provides an excellent opportunity to create a beautiful piece while contributing to a greater cause. Join us in championing sustainable practices with the "Empty Nets" shawl, and let your knitting serve as a statement for the preservation of our precious oceans.
