Fannie Fouche
My Grandfather, affectionately known as Pop, was stationed in France during the First World War and continued his service for several months after Armistice Day. Throughout this time, he sent rosy, hopeful, and comforting letters home to his beloved Mother, Fannie Fouche Hardy. This knitting design draws inspiration from the styles of that era, infused with a contemporary, hopeful, and comforting approach to modern styling.
CONSTRUCTION
This beautiful piece is constructed by knitting from the top down, a popular technique that many knitters love. The sleeve caps are knit simultaneously with the yoke, creating a seamless garment that tells a knitter’s story as they progress. Once you complete the yoke, you will separate into sleeves and the body for an elegant finish. The decorative stitch patterns on both the front and back are not only visually striking but also easily memorized, making the knitting experience both enjoyable and rewarding.
For this design, we recommend avoiding variegated yarns to maintain a cohesive look. If you choose to work with a semi-solid yarn, such as the luxurious Providence, we suggest alternating skeins every two rows. This technique helps to prevent unwanted color pooling and ensures a rich overall depth of color throughout your finished garment.
YARDAGE
For this project, you will need approximately 1000-1080-1130-1180—1280-1350-1410-1480—1590-1660-1720-1790 estimated yards of your chosen yarn. Planning ahead with your yarn requirements will help you avoid interruptions during your creative process.
NEEDLES
For the best results, we suggest using US sizes 6 and 7 needles. A 40” circular needle (or longer, if available) is ideal for this project, along with sets of double-pointed needles (DPNs), which will assist in knitting the sleeves seamlessly. Ensure you have the right tools at hand to create a piece that honors the legacy of my Grandfather while providing warmth and comfort on your own knitting journey.
