Gallus - knitting pattern

Gallus

$6.00

When I sought help naming these delightful mittens, my daughter, who is quite the science enthusiast, noticed the resemblance of the cable patterning to chicken wire. This inspired her to search online, where she discovered the binomial nomenclature for chicken, "Gallus gallus". And so, our unique mitten pattern received a name that pays homage to this cherished bird.

The Gallus mittens are beautifully crafted using Schaefer Yarns Heather. This exquisite yarn showcases the intricate stitch patterning splendidly in its semi-solid colorways. The luxurious blend of merino wool and silk not only provides warmth but also creates a heavenly softness that makes these mittens a joy to wear during chilly days.

Additionally, I received an interesting note from Murdo, who pointed out that "gallus" has a fascinating and multifaceted meaning in Scots dialect:

gallus (ga·luss) Dialect, chiefly Scot ~adj. 1. self-confident, daring, cheeky. 2. stylish, impressive (especially in Glasgow: "He's pure gallus, by the way"). 3. Originally derogatory, meaning wild; a rascal; deserving to be hanged (from the gallows).

This adds an extra layer of charm to our Gallus mittens, combining both a celebration of nature and a nod to cultural linguistics. Whether you're knitting for yourself or as a thoughtful gift, these mittens are sure to be a stylish, impressive accessory in any winter wardrobe.
