Guitar Trim Hat
After knitting several prototypes of this unique hat, my musician husband enthusiastically remarked on how closely the pattern resembled the herringbone trim often found on guitars. In celebration of his suggestion, I decided to incorporate this inspired design into the final pattern. This stylish hat allows for quick completion thanks to its well-planned colorwork techniques. Remarkably, there are only six rows that require two colors to be used on the same row, making it an accessible project for knitters of all skill levels. The hat is knit from the edge up to the top, ensuring a beautiful finish.
If you have a guitar enthusiast in your life, consider knitting one of these hats featuring an ebony and ivory band set against a woodtone or brown background! I also crafted a version using natural alpaca shades, which turned out beautifully and showcased the intricate herringbone pattern perfectly.
Gauge: 5.5 stitches per inch and 6.5 rows per inch. This gauge ensures that your finished product will fit well and maintain its shape over time.
Sizes: The pattern offers multiple sizes to fit a variety of heads, including Child Small, Adult Extra Small, Child Medium, Adult Small, Child Large, Adult Medium, Adult Large, and Adult Extra Large. The finished circumferences for each size are approximately as follows: 16.75 inches for Child S, 17.5 inches for Adult XS, 18.25 inches for Child M, 19 inches for Adult S, and 19.75 inches for Adult L. For reference, an adult medium head typically measures around 22 inches, so a snug-fitting hat should be about 3-5 inches less than the desired head circumference.
Needle Size: To achieve the best results, use US 4 / 3.5mm needles. You can opt for either three 7-inch long double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a small-diameter circular needle (approximately 16 inches in length) for most of the hat's construction. You’ll switch to DPNs for the remaining rows, ensuring a seamless finish on the hat's top.
