Hap Cardigan
Introducing the enchanting Hap Cardigan, a stunning lacy garment inspired by the beloved traditional Shetland Hap Shawls. With their classic plain garter stitch centers and vibrant feather and fan edgings, these shawls have long been a favorite among knitters. While shawls are undeniably beautiful, many of us don’t wear them as often as we’d like. That’s why I created the versatile Hap Cardigan—a stylish cardigan that brings the elegance of a shawl into your everyday wardrobe.
The Hap Cardigan is thoughtfully designed to drape loosely at the front, providing effortless comfort and a flattering silhouette. Unlike traditional cardigans that fasten at the front, this design is intended to be worn open, allowing for a flowy look that is perfect for layering. To ensure the best fit, it's recommended to choose a size with 0-5cm of negative ease at your high bust measurement (the round torso at your armpits), rather than your full bust measurement. This will create a chic, relaxed fit that enhances the look of the cardigan.
For your convenience, detailed charts are included for both a two- and three-color version of this lovely cardigan, giving you the creative freedom to express your unique style. The three-color version was originally crafted using fine Icelandic lace weight yarn. When selecting your yarn, opt for approximately 340 (400, 480, 550, 650, 730) meters / 370 (430, 520, 600, 710, 800) yards of main color (MC) and 160 (180, 210, 230, 260, 280) meters / 180 (200, 230, 250, 280, 300) yards each of contrasting colors (CC1 and CC2).
When substituting yarn, prioritize a heavy lace weight that maintains its shape after blocking. A high wool content is recommended for optimal drape and warmth, allowing your Hap Cardigan to be a cherished piece in your wardrobe for years to come. Embrace the art of knitting and enjoy creating this exquisite cardigan that blends tradition with modern flair!
