Welcome to the Malabrigo Quickies [program][1]! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Malabrigo Yarn for their generous support in bringing this project to life.

*As I was creating the Hengpai and [Zongpai][2] hats, I couldn't help but notice how similar they are in their intricate stitch patterns, yet distinct in their construction techniques—one hat is knit vertically while the other is knit horizontally.

In Chinese writing, horizontal text is referred to as hengpai, and vertical text is known as zongpai. Learning about these two writing styles inspired me to name my knitted hats accordingly, reflecting their unique techniques and the cultural significance behind them.

The Hengpai hat is crafted sideways in a lovely stocking stitch pattern, utilizing short rows to expertly shape the crown for a perfect fit. Once all short row sections are completed, the hat is cast off, and then stitches are intentionally dropped to create a stunning dropped stitch openwork design that adds an eye-catching element. After the seam is securely sewn, I meticulously pick up stitches to knit the stylish brim of the hat. For a seamless finish, I utilized a grafting technique to join the back of the hat, ensuring it looks polished and professional.

Here are the essential details for this charming project:

  • Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted - 1 skein

Whether you're an experienced knitter or a budding enthusiast, this pattern offers a beautiful blend of technique and creativity. Get ready to enjoy the process of knitting these hats, and experience the joy of crafting your very own pieces that reflect both style and cultural significance!
