Hickory
Welcome to the first design of my Garters and Lace collection! The Hickory hat is the perfect project for beginner knitters looking to add a touch of elegance to their skills. This charming hat features predominantly garter stitch combined with a delightful pop of lace, making it both simple and sophisticated. The pattern includes detailed charts that are written out, allowing you to quickly knit a beautiful hat while also honing your ability to read lace charts. Choose a solid or heathered yarn to enhance the stitch definition, settle down with a warm cup of tea and your favorite Netflix series, and dive into the joy of knitting the Hickory hat!
To knit this lovely hat, you will need: Approximately 175-225 metres (191-246 yards) of worsted weight yarn (I used Alpakka Ull for the sample). You will also require 3.5 mm circular needles with a 40 cm (16 inch) cable (size 4 US) and 4.5 mm circular needles with a 40 cm (16 inch) cable (size 7 US), or a size that helps you obtain the correct gauge. Additionally, prepare 4.5 mm double-pointed needles (size 7 US), a cable needle similar in size to your working needle or a spare double-pointed needle, stitch markers, a crochet hook, and a tapestry needle for finishing touches.
Gauge: It is essential to achieve a gauge of 18 stitches by 20 rows, which equals 10 cm (4 inches) in garter stitch when using 4.5 mm needles, to ensure your hat fits perfectly.
Required Skills: To successfully knit the Hickory hat, you should be familiar with the following techniques: knitting, purling, yarnovers, left- and right-leaning knit decreases, centered double decreases, making bobbles, and cabling. This project is a fantastic way to not only practice these skills but to also create a stylish accessory that you'll love to wear or gift. Whether you're a novice or brushing up on your techniques, the Hickory hat is a rewarding knitting project that combines functionality with fashion!
