Materials

For these fairisle mittens, I used the same high-quality yarn as featured in the Hope Springs Hat, incorporating almost identical colors to create a flawless match. If you’ve already crafted the hat and have some background yarn leftover, along with all the contrast yarns, you only need to purchase one additional ball of background yarn. This will ensure you have enough material for your mittens. In total, you'll need approximately 30g of background yarn and about 24g for the contrast yarns.

Size

These mittens are designed as a single universal size to fit a hand circumference of 7.5 inches. However, if you want a slightly smaller or larger pair, you can easily alter the size by adjusting your needle size. I also recommend lightly felting the mittens after knitting to enhance their windproof qualities and increase warmth on those brisk days!

The design features a classic ‘Selbu’ style thumb, where the gusset stitches are cleverly held on hold using waste yarn and then picked up later for a tidy finish. This technique adds both functionality and style to your mittens.

To successfully create these mittens, you should have a solid understanding of stranded knitting techniques and be comfortable working in the round. For those who prefer a more flexible option, a separate pattern for fingerless gloves is available, allowing you to choose the best style for your needs.
