Killarney Caubeen (Irish tam) - knitting pattern

Killarney Caubeen (Irish tam)

$4.54

Inspired by the enchanting opening line of "Christmas in Killarney," this charming caubeen, also known as an Irish beret, is both a delightful and practical knitting project. Featuring intricate designs of holly leaves and ivy, this pattern is a great choice for those looking to enhance their skills while creating a beautiful accessory. The pattern is shown in a DK acrylic/wool blend, but it can also be crafted using pure wool for a richer texture and warmth.

The holly and ivy motifs are thoughtfully charted, along with the shaping decreases for the top of the caubeen, making it easy to follow. The chart represents one-eighth of the overall design, allowing knitters to visualize and execute each step effectively. The sample was crafted using approximately 225 yards of main color (MC) in dark charcoal grey and 125 yards of contrasting color (CC) in light spring green, utilizing Plymouth's Encore DK yarn.

A unique characteristic of the caubeen, or Irish beret, is its deeper lower band compared to a traditional tam or beret, providing both style and comfort. This sturdy knit design is not only a wonderful addition to your winter wardrobe but also makes for a thoughtful gift.

This pattern is part of the January design for The Brigid Collection, a special series of knitting patterns dedicated to celebrating Irish hand-knits throughout the year 2012. Named after my inspirational patron saint, St. Brigid of Kildare, this collection honors the rich traditions of Irish knitting.

Each month, around the 15th, a new Celtic-inspired design will be unveiled featuring this distinctive logo. Expect to find a variety of styles, including classic cable-knit designs, elegant Irish lace, and much more. Join us in this celebratory journey of knitting and heritage, and create your own cozy caubeen to wear or gift!
