Kim the Kiwi - knitting pattern

Kim the Kiwi

$4.09

Welcome to my first 'Kiwiana' pattern created in 2012! This year, I decided to enhance the original design by adding the Rainbow Kiwi, which beautifully reflects the rich diversity of New Zealand's culture and landscapes. The Rainbow Kiwi and the smaller kiwis make perfect stash busters, allowing you to use up various yarn leftovers while creating something truly unique.

The yarn I used for the large kiwi was by Touch Yarns (Mt Pisa), which is unfortunately discontinued. However, one of the best aspects of this versatile pattern is that it accommodates virtually any yarn you have on hand. The pattern offers three different sizes, ranging from a big cuddly kiwi to an adorable baby kiwi that fits right in the palm of your hand.

For the rainbow version, I knitted using a medium size and incorporated nine colorful leftovers from my oddments stash. You'll need 25 meters of yarn for the beak and legs, while the widest stripe demands 20 meters. Therefore, ensure you have at least that amount for four of your stripes. The remaining stripes will require significantly less yarn, making this project efficient and enjoyable!

Size Requirements:

  • Large Kiwi: Requires 80 meters of 14ply/chunky yarn, 25 meters of 8ply, and utilizes 5mm and 4mm needles.
  • Medium Kiwi: Requires a total of 125 meters of 8ply yarn, using 3.75mm needles and 3.5mm double-pointed needles.
  • Baby Kiwi: Requires a total of 105 meters of 4ply yarn, using 2.5mm double-pointed needles.

This Kiwiana pattern is perfect for knitters of all skill levels looking to explore color and creativity while celebrating New Zealand's vibrant heritage. Dive into your yarn stash and start knitting your very own Rainbow Kiwi today!
