Kinderdijk
Introducing the Windmill Lace Shawl, a stunning challenge designed for the more experienced lace knitter. This exquisite shawl is crafted in the round, starting from the center and expanding outward, with four identical triangles seamlessly forming a beautiful square. The inspiration behind the shawl’s name comes from the intricate lace pattern found in Section D, which many of my knitting friends noted resembles the sails of traditional windmills. This delightful imagery brings to mind the iconic rows of windmills at Kinderdijk in the picturesque Netherlands, adding to the shawl's charm and significance.
After a thorough blocking process, the finished shawl measures an impressive 44”/112cm across when worked to the recommended pattern tension. At this tension, each repeat of the 24-stitch and 24-row pattern used in Section D will measure approximately 4 1/2” (11.5cm) in width and 3 ½” (9cm) in height. Although exact tension isn't strictly vital, variations can impact both the amount of yarn needed and the final size of your beautiful shawl.
For your convenience, both written and charted instructions are provided for all lace patterns, allowing for a flexible crafting experience. It’s worth noting that using the charts is not essential for completing this enchanting design.
To create your Windmill Lace Shawl, you will need approximately 1200 yards of lace weight yarn. If you choose one of the suggested yarn selections noted in the pattern, you’ll only need a single type of yarn—there’s no need to purchase all three! This pattern not only allows you to express your creativity but also supports sustainable knitting practices by reducing excess material usage.
Embark on this intricate knitting journey and add a touch of elegance to your collection with the Windmill Lace Shawl pattern—a perfect blend of artistry and craftsmanship for every dedicated lace knitter!
