As an avid lover of nature’s most quirky, peculiar, mysterious, and oftentimes misunderstood creatures, I've decided to create designs for some unique natural oddballs that anyone can take a closer look at!

Meet the enchanting manatee, a magnificent underwater mammal that can weigh up to a hefty 600 kilograms. Fondly known as the ‘sea cow,’ this gentle giant spends its days leisurely grazing on seagrasses and other aquatic plants. The manatee belongs to the fascinating order of Sirenia, commonly known as sirens, a name derived from the tales of lonely sailors who mistakenly thought they were encountering mermaids! Beyond their calm demeanor, manatees possess a playful side and are often seen swimming upside down, executing impressive flips and rolls. For the knitting enthusiasts out there, the knitted version of this delightful creature offers an urban twist and requires no grass at all!

This charming manatee knitting pattern is categorized as an easy to medium project, making it accessible for knitters of various skill levels. It incorporates short row knitting techniques and knitting in the round, providing a delightful crafting experience while creating a lifelike representation of this beloved sea animal. Finished, the manatee measures approximately 22 cm from nose to tail, perfect for display or cuddling.

To knit your very own manatee, you will need 2.5 mm double pointed needles (UK size 12) and approximately 53 meters of Rowan Felted Tweed yarn in the beautiful clay color (shade 177). Dive into the world of knitting with this whimsical pattern that celebrates one of nature’s most charming and misunderstood creatures—the manatee!
