Marine Building Shawl
This reversible crescent-shaped lace shawlette is the sixth in a captivating series of 12 unique patterns that will collectively comprise my Canadian Art Deco Knits e-book. These patterns are being released monthly, starting in January 2015, allowing you to build an exquisite collection over the year. You can choose to purchase each pattern individually or opt for the complete e-book for the best value.
The stunning Marine Building in Vancouver stands as my personal favorite example of Canadian Art Deco architecture, inspiring this intricate design. Its remarkable features and the mesmerizing repeated diamond patterns surrounding the entrance served as the muse for this shawlette. The elegance of the Marine Building captures the essence of Art Deco, making it a perfect source of inspiration for knitters who appreciate architectural beauty.
The lace diamond border of this shawl is crafted using both stockinette and reverse stockinette stitches. The contrasting textures beautifully interact with light, enhancing the delicate diamond pattern and making it a true standout piece. This shawlette not only showcases your knitting skills but also serves as an artistic expression of the Canadian Art Deco movement.
For the fingering weight sample, only 95g of Riverside Studio Merino Sock was needed (approximately 399 yards or 365 meters). The final measurements of this version come to an elegant 63 inches long and 10.5 inches deep at the center. If you prefer a thicker, sport weight yarn, the sample used 175g of Raventwist Deva in Slate (around 429 yards or 392 meters), yielding a larger shawlette measuring 71 inches long and 13 inches deep at the middle. This versatility allows you to choose the weight and drape that suits your style.
For your convenience, a suggested fingering weight yarn is displayed below, making it easy to start your next knitting project right away.
As you create this exquisite lace shawlette, you’ll not only master new knitting techniques but also celebrate the beauty of Canadian architecture through your craft. Whether keeping it for yourself or gifting it to a loved one, this shawl is sure to be a cherished accessory in any wardrobe.
