Mary's Hap Shawl

$6.65

Introducing my version of the beautiful Hap Shawl, lovingly named after my inspiring elderly neighbor, Mary Sutherland, who is 90 years young! This remarkable shawl is hand-knitted using high-quality Jamieson & Smith Shetland 2-ply jumper yarn, which corresponds to a 4-ply weight. The term "Hap" refers to a traditional Shetland garment that means to “cover, wrap, or keep warm.” Historically, these shawls have been worn by Shetland women for centuries, primarily for practical purposes rather than decoration. In fact, they were also used to wrap infants against the harsh and unpredictable Shetland weather.

The unique construction of this Hap Shawl begins with knitting outward from a charming center square, which is crafted diagonally for a touch of elegance. Following this, stitches for the borders are skillfully picked up around the edges, and the set-up rows are knitted to form a beautiful base. The shawl is then completed in the round, featuring the traditional Old Shale border pattern that creates a stunning visual appeal while progressively increasing at the corners. To finish, the intricate lace edging is hand-knitted on last, adding a delicate and sophisticated touch to the design.

Whether you're an experienced knitter or just beginning your knitting journey, this Hap Shawl pattern offers the perfect opportunity to create a timeless piece that not only pays homage to tradition but also serves as a warm, cozy accessory in any wardrobe. Explore the beauty of Shetland knitting and immerse yourself in the art of creating a shawl that embodies comfort and craftsmanship!
