Memories of Ewe shawl
During my enchanting visit to Shetland, I was captivated by three striking memories: the gently undulating treeless yet lush green landscapes, the diverse and colorful sheep that roamed freely, and this charming traditional cockle shell pattern that truly embodies the essence of the region.
The cockle shell pattern is a historic and beloved design originating from Shetland, primarily used in rectangular scarves and stoles. In this innovative project, I have reimagined the classic pattern to fit the unique decreases and symmetry of a triangular shawl, allowing you to enjoy its beauty in a new form.
Construction: This shawl features a bottom-up triangular/heart-shaped design, offering a delightful knitting experience. Instead of beginning with the overwhelming task of casting on 381 stitches, you’ll start by knitting a sideways lace edging. This method not only makes the project more manageable but also adds a unique touch to the shawl’s appearance.
Stitch Patterns: To ensure clarity and ease of use, both charted and written stitch patterns are provided. Whether you prefer to read charts or written instructions, you will find the guidance you need to create this beautiful shawl effortlessly.
Yardage: The pattern requires approximately 850 meters / 940 yards of yarn, making it suitable for various knitting levels as you work through each delightful section.
Yarn: For this project, I recommend using Jamieson & Smith Shetland Supreme Jumper Weight, a 100% Shetland Wool that is both undyed and fingering weight (14 wpi). Each skein weighs 50 grams and measures 172 meters / 188 yards.
Colour Requirements: For a stunning end product, you will need one skein of each of the following colors:
- no. 1: 2004 Moorit
- no. 2: 2007 Sholmit
- no. 3: 2002 Mooskit
- no.4: 2008 Katmollet (0.5 skeins)
- no. 5: 2006 Gaulmogot (0.5 skeins)
- no. 6: 2001 White
By crafting this triangular shawl with the classic Shetland cockle shell pattern, you will not only create a beautiful piece of wearable art but also connect with the rich heritage of Shetland knitting. Dive into this project and experience the joy of knitting with a pattern that pays homage to the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant textile traditions of Shetland.
