Believe it or not, this unique afghan started its life as an engaging worksheet designed for students in a mathematics classroom. Some pupils were struggling to identify the properties of four-sided shapes, so we creatively devised a fun colouring-in sheet to assist them. Every shape featured in this vibrant patchwork has four sides, making it the perfect educational tool.

This innovative sheet eventually evolved into a versatile afghan, allowing it to be used repeatedly to visually demonstrate the differences between the various shapes. But the journey doesn’t stop there! We also created a comprehensive booklet of instructions, enabling you to knit your very own stunning afghan. The best part? You don’t need to know or even care about the geometric shapes to appreciate its beauty; the afghan is spectacular whether you understand its original purpose or not.

The design is entirely in garter stitch, making it extremely easy to knit, even for beginners. Many of the individual pieces are knitted directly onto existing shapes, which means that while the overall piece gets quite large, you are only ever working with one yarn at a time and in a small area. This method keeps the project manageable and enjoyable, preventing any overwhelming feelings.

Included with the booklet is the original colouring-in sheet, so you can experiment with your own colour combinations before you even pick up your needles. This feature allows you to customize your afghan to perfectly match your personal style or home decor.

The original afghan was made using Aran yarn, but feel free to choose any thickness of yarn that you prefer.
