Mirabella - A Kirigami Cardigan
If you’ve ever found yourself captivated by a friend’s stylish cropped denim jacket during church, you’re not alone! Inspired by that moment of distraction, I began sketching ideas on the back of my bulletin. When I returned home, I was excited to create a delightful child-sized version of that denim look, minus the cropped style. This pattern is perfect for a special occasion, particularly for my dear friend Anne, who was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first baby girl. This charming garment is crafted to resemble a classic denim jacket, showcasing unique features that set it apart. The design uses the Linen stitch on the bottom band and along both the front bands and cuffs. Additionally, there's a clever placement of a purl column that curves gracefully to mimic the appearance of seams found on traditional denim jackets. Despite its playful aesthetic, this pattern remains a one-piece Kirigami-style garment. It cleverly incorporates shaped sleeves and shoulders, reminiscent of more conventional sweater designs. What makes this pattern truly special is its versatility; while it is named after an adorable little girl, it would equally suit a baby boy’s wardrobe as a trendy jacket alternative. The construction process is straightforward: the fronts are skillfully grafted together before moving on to the cuffs, and the sleeves are neatly sewn together to complete the piece. Kirigami knitting draws inspiration from the incredible brilliance of Elizabeth Zimmerman's Bog Jacket, a classic design you can explore further in her book, ***Knitting Around.*** Whether you’re a seasoned knitter or a beginner ready to take on a fun new project, this denim-inspired jacket is a wonderful addition to any child's wardrobe, combining practicality with a touch of trendy flair.
