Naniboujou Mittens
The Naniboujou Fine Gauge Mittens draw inspiration from the stunning dining room of the historic Naniboujou Lodge and Restaurant, located on the picturesque North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Just a stone's throw east of Grand Marais, this iconic lodge was constructed at the tail end of the Roaring 20s to serve as a luxurious retreat for elite members, including legendary figures like Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey. However, when the stock market crashed in October 1929, many of the ambitious plans for the lodge faltered. Fortunately, the main lodge, featuring its breathtaking dining room, was nearly complete.
This dining room stands as an extraordinary showcase of vibrant color and artistic expression. It was brought to life by painter Antoine Gouffe, who drew inspiration from Cree Indian designs. He skillfully blended a spectrum of clear, vivid colors to craft the modern murals adorning the walls and ceiling. Remarkably, despite undergoing different ownerships and experiencing periods of vacancy, the dining room has retained its original charm without any touch-ups or repainting, preserving its artistic integrity for generations to admire.
