Spirited Away is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting films ever created, and inspired by its magical world, I recently crafted a No Face spirit to accompany me on my knitting adventures. No Face, who initially causes a bit of chaos but later discovers the joy of knitting, makes for an adorable and whimsical knitting companion. Below, you'll find the complete guide to create your very own No Face, complete with materials and skills required!

This delightful knitting pattern is designed using DK yarn and 3.75mm needles. To knit your own No Face, you'll need approximately 50g of black DK yarn along with small scraps of white and lilac or pink yarn for his unique facial features. When completed, your No Face will stand around 25cm tall. One of the great aspects of this project is that gauge isn't crucial, allowing you the freedom to experiment with different needles and yarn weights. This means you can easily create a smaller or larger version of your knitting companion, tailored to your preferences!

In preparing to make your No Face spirit, be sure to have the following supplies on hand: stuffing, a tapestry needle for assembly, and some stitch markers to keep your work organized. Note that this pattern is ideal for knitters with slightly more advanced skills due to the inclusion of short rows. Here are the essential skills you’ll need to successfully complete this charming project:

  • Casting on and joining in the round
  • Basic knitting techniques
  • Purling
  • Making 1 right (m1r)
  • Making 1 left (m1l)
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk)
  • Knit two together (k2tog)
  • Duplicate stitch for facial details
  • I-cord technique for added dimension
  • Short rows (both German method or otherwise)

Whether you are an experienced knitter or an adventurous beginner looking to build your skills, creating a No Face spirit is a fun and rewarding project. Not only will you have a charming companion to join you in your crafting journeys, but you’ll also gain confidence with various knitting techniques. So gather your materials and start your magical knitting adventure today!
