I’m thrilled to announce that I have completed my very first self-designed knitting pattern, which I’m excited to share with you all! Introducing “Nonna Rosalie’s Toque,” a beautiful homage to my beloved little Italian great-grandmother, Rosalina Lombardi. Growing up, I was captivated by stories of feisty “Little Grandma” and her adventurous bootlegging escapades in Denver during the Prohibition era. Immigrating from Italy in November of 1908, she arrived in New York at just 15 years old. While she probably only had a large scarf to cover her head against the chill, I imagine her wearing a classic, feminine low-profile head covering, reminiscent of the cloche hats that would gain popularity in the 1920s.

Inspired by this vision, I’ve crafted a delicate and cozy double-brim knit hat, perfect for keeping your ears warm during the colder months. “Nonna Rosalie’s Toque” features a charming crown adorned with small bow knots, which create subtle patterns and textures reminiscent of vintage calico fabrics. Depending on the type of yarn you choose, the texture can be soft and muted or more pronounced, adding a unique touch to this timeless piece.

This knitting pattern is designed for knitters of all skill levels who wish to create a lovely and nostalgic accessory that pays tribute to Italian heritage and family history. Whether you’re making it for yourself or as a thoughtful gift for a loved one, this toque is a versatile addition to anyone’s winter wardrobe.
