Nurmes

Introducing the Nurmes hat, a cozy and stylish warm stretchy hat perfect for those brisk days! This unique design alternates between 1 x 1 ribbing and intricate cable patterns created by crossing over two or three stitches. While mastering the crossovers may take a bit of practice, once you get the hang of it, you'll find that knitting the Nurmes hat becomes a soothing and intuitive experience.

The inspiration for this hat came after I discovered that the alpaca yarn I had was not showcasing its potential in standard knitting. No matter how much I tried, the stitches appeared uneven and lackluster. The ingenious solution was to incorporate twisted knit stitches across the right side of the fabric. This technique not only solved the problem of unevenness but also introduced a stunning and textured appearance that enhances the beauty of the hat.

Skill Level: Intermediate. The Nurmes hat is knit in the round, and mastering the crossover techniques may require some familiarity with more advanced knitting stitches.

Recommended Yarn: Choose a DK weight yarn that meets the gauge requirements, with approximately 50 – 80g needed for the project. I used Garnstudio Drops Puna (100% alpaca, 50g = 120 yards / 110m). For my size L hat, I utilized a skein and a half of this lovely yarn.
