Out & Out Poncho
This versatile poncho is the perfect garment for those transitional shoulder seasons—spring and early fall—(pardon the pun). It serves as an ideal spring coat when the weather permits, or you can effortlessly throw it over your favorite tee shirt when the air conditioning in your office gets cranked up during the hot summer months. It’s a stylish and functional layer for any season!
Crafted in a beautiful twisted rib stitch using a bulky weight yarn, the gauge for this poncho can be a bit deceiving. Make sure to choose a yarn that recommends 9 - 12mm needles with a stitch gauge of approximately 8-10 stitches over a 4”/10 cm swatch. For this design, you’ll be working at a tighter gauge to create a denser, warmer fabric that is both cozy and fashionable.
This easy-to-intermediate knitting pattern is worked in two separate pieces, offering a fun and engaging challenge for knitters of varying skill levels. The construction features matched double decreases and carefully sewn raglan seams that join the top seamlessly. You'll also pick up stitches at the neckline and work them in the round. The use of Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off ensures that the neckline remains snug yet stretchy enough to fit comfortably over your head, providing both style and ease of wear.
One of the great features of this poncho is its customizable front openings—tailor them to your personal preference! For my version, I opted to keep the front openings just wide enough to allow comfortable movement while typing at my computer. Feel free to get creative by adding zippers, a latch closure, or any design element that suits your style! This poncho is not just a practical addition to your wardrobe; it's a unique canvas for your knitting creativity.
Whether you're an experienced knitter or just starting on your crafting journey, this poncho pattern is an exciting project that combines comfort, style, and versatility. So grab your bulky yarn and 9 - 12mm needles, and let’s get knitting!
