Partridge & Twisted Rib Socks
About the Design: It is a delightful serendipity that I decided to rework these two colorful children’s sock designs using doubled Cascade Yarns Eco+ yarn for their publication in the Fall 2002 (#8) issue of my beloved Heels and Toes Gazette, marking the 10th anniversary of their conception. Originally designed for charity knitting, these charming socks also make fantastic last-minute holiday gifts. Their thick and cozy nature ensures quick knitting and exceptional warmth, while vibrant colors capture the attention of kids, making them eager to wear these fun creations. The unique twisted rib stitch pattern creates a delightful texture that pops out like elongated popcorns, providing both visual interest and structural integrity. The socks stand up beautifully without needing any additional ribbing, unless you choose to include it. Additionally, the Eye of Partridge stitch pattern is visually enhanced by incorporating a second contrasting color, resulting in an eye-catching hounds-tooth appearance that adds a playful touch.
Gauge: For this knitting pattern, the gauge is 4 sts and 6 rows = 1” (2.5 cm) in Stockinette stitch (St st) with 2 strands of yarn held together, using size 8 needles or the appropriate size needed to achieve gauge. To ensure a perfect fit and prevent any knitting mishaps, it’s highly recommended to take the time to check your gauge before you begin.
Notes: This pattern requires holding 2 strands of yarn together throughout the knitting process, which not only adds to the texture but also enhances the overall warmth of the socks. Each pair of these delightful handmade socks typically uses approximately 75 grams of the main color (MC) and about 30 grams of the contrasting color (CC), making them a great project for using up yarn scraps while creating a practical and enjoyable gift!
Perfect not only for the holiday season but also for cold winter days, these children’s socks are sure to be a hit both as a charity contribution and a cherished addition to any child's wardrobe. Dive into this fun and creative knitting project today!
