Perfectly Plain Skull Cap

This charming hat pattern was inspired by my son’s simple request for a perfectly plain hat. Although I typically gravitate towards more intricate designs, I embraced the challenge for him. But then he added a delightful twist—he wanted a subtle fish border at the edge! YAY!!! The result is a beautifully understated design featuring my beloved fish skeletons, all crafted in a palette of soothing greys. Choose from high-quality yarn options like Falklands wool or the incredibly soft Cascade 220 Superwash Merino. Both yarns will give your hat a lovely drape and warmth.
This pattern allows for versatility, as you can knit it in its “perfectly plain” form by omitting the fish border. If you do so, just increase the main color (MC) to compensate for the absence of the contrasting color (CC). The hat has a great fit, featuring a slight column of ribbing that adds a touch of textural interest without overwhelming the design. It’s available in three sizes: SM (small), MD (medium), and LG (large), which is showcased in the accompanying photo.
If you're looking for a slightly larger fit, consider using one needle size up and switching to a regular worsted weight yarn, such as Cascade 220. This adaptation allows you to customize the hat further to meet your preferences.
