Sanders Street
Introducing Number 11 in my beloved "Michiganisms" sock series! These unique socks celebrate Michigan's rich geological history and make a wonderful addition to your knitting collection.
The Detroit area is home to a remarkable geological treasure: rock salt. Its existence was discovered back in 1895, leading to one of the most impressive engineering feats of that era—the construction of a functional salt mine. Since 1997, the Detroit Salt Company, LLC, has proudly owned and operated Michigan’s only rock salt mine. This privately held, woman-owned business is deeply rooted in southeast Michigan, much like the mine itself. They provide local customers with tons of rock salt, essential for safely maintaining the treacherous winter roads typical of the Midwest. This massive underground salt mine extends over 1,500 acres, boasting more than 100 miles of roads, and is often referred to as Detroit’s “city beneath a city.” If you want to visit, the mineshaft opening is conveniently located at 12841 Sanders Street in Detroit, Michigan.
These delightful socks are crafted from cuff to toe using an easily remembered pattern that makes them a joy to knit for both beginners and experienced knitters alike. The combination of style and functionality ensures that you can create beautiful, warm socks while also adding a personal touch to your winter wardrobe or gifting them to friends and family.
Thank you for taking the time to explore my project! I truly hope you enjoy knitting these deliciously cozy socks. Happy knitting!
