Sonder
sonder, n. the profound realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. This beautiful concept is aptly captured in the dictionary of obscure sorrows.
In German, "sonder" translates to “special”, which perfectly reflects the unique yarn I've had the pleasure to work with for this project. This is my third collaboration with my wonderful husband Marcin, the creative mastermind behind the brand Martin’s Lab. For this shawl, I felt incredibly fortunate to design a cabled, 100% reversible shawl in a color that was custom-created for me. This rich, darkish earthy green is aptly named Thicket.
The yarn I chose for this project is Tibetan Singles, renowned for being the softest yarn I've ever worked with—so soft that it almost feels indecent! The luxurious blend includes 65% merino, 20% alpaca, and 15% yak fiber, ensuring a beautifully warm and cozy result. Each skein contains 480 meters (525 yards) per 120 grams, making it perfect for a range of knitting projects.
Yarn: 2 skeins of Tibetan Singles by Martin’s Lab (65% merino; 20% alpaca; 15% yak; 480m/525y per 120g). Featured in colorway: Thicket.
Gauge: 26 stitches and 36 rows = 10 cm/4” in Garter stitch measured flat after wet blocking. While achieving this gauge isn’t strictly crucial for the project, variations may impact the finished size and the total required yardage.
This stunning reversible shawl is not only a testament to the beauty of collaboration but also encapsulates the essence of sonder—reminding us that every stitch we knit contributes to a larger narrative, one that is as beautifully intricate as the lives we weave through our craft.
