Spinal Tap Dishcloth
This delightful knitted dishcloth or towel pattern is perfect for anyone looking to add a personal touch to their kitchen basics. It starts from a single corner and elegantly grows into a square, allowing you to customize the size to fit your needs! Whether you prefer a compact dishcloth or a larger kitchen towel, this pattern can cater to your preferences. (See below for more details on sizing.)
No more fretting about running out of yarn halfway through your project! You can confidently cast off when you have approximately three times the length of the cast-off edge remaining, ensuring you have just enough yarn left for a neat and tidy bind-off.
This pattern is also an excellent way to master the "spine" technique, which is commonly used in many intricate knit shawl designs. It's both functional and a fantastic opportunity to enhance your knitting skills!
ETA: I was curious about my design process too, since it has been a while! I revisited the pattern and confirmed it can be worked to any desired size. Feel free to make it as big or as small as you'd like using the same method.
If you prefer a rectangular towel, simply bind off one side, adjusting about half the stitches or as many as looks good given the yarn overs (yo’s) you've incorporated. Then, continue knitting in garter stitch to complete your project. For a semi-symmetrical look, finish your first section of garter stitch and bind off. Next, pick up stitches along the opposite edge of the cloth, and knit down, ensuring that you maintain the same number of stitches and rows in garter for a cohesive design.
Get creative and make this pattern work for you! You have the skills to make something beautiful and functional for your kitchen.
Happy knitting!
Best,
