Storm Dress
In 2018, a massive summer storm swept through Auckland, bringing widespread damage and forcing schools and businesses to close while residents stayed safe at home. It was during this intense weather that I completed my latest knitting project—a cozy dress designed to keep your little one warm and snug, no matter how miserable the outdoors may be. Shortly after the storm subsided, I captured stunning photographs of the finished dress in our local park, which unfortunately bore the scars of the storm's wrath.
This unique dress features a beautiful herringbone detail around the hem, adding a touch of surface interest to an otherwise simple yet elegant design. The pattern is perfect for knitters looking to create a functional and stylish garment. When selecting yarn for this versatile dress, it's essential to choose carefully. The larger sizes can turn out to be relatively heavy, so opting for a loftier and lighter Aran weight yarn is highly recommended. For this particular project, I used an acrylic yarn—a choice I don't typically make. However, the washability factor was crucial for a dress of this size, especially for an active child!
Important Note: The sizing for this dress ranges from 1 year to 6 years, featuring a single band of woven herringbone stitch. For sizes 7 years and up, you will find two bands of herringbone stitch, separated by a band of plain stockinette stitch (St st). This thoughtful design ensures that the dress not only remains comfortable but also looks stylish as your child grows.
By following this knitting pattern, you can create a beautiful piece that stands out while providing warmth and durability for everyday wear. Whether you're an experienced knitter or a beginner looking for a fun project, this dress pattern is sure to delight both you and the little one who wears it. So gather your materials and get ready to create a wonderful garment that embodies both practicality and style!
