Swirl Skirt - knitting pattern

Swirl Skirt

$7.00

Originally published in Interweave Knits magazine during the Summer of 2011, this knitting pattern has been thoughtfully updated and modified. The waistline adjustments enhance the fit, while new instructions for customizing the skirt based on different yarn weights and desired skirt lengths ensure that every knitter can find success with this design. Whether you choose sport or fingering weight yarn, you’re sure to create a lovely, flowing skirt. THIS PATTERN IS HIGHLY ADJUSTABLE FOR VARIOUS SIZES WITH A LITTLE CALCULATIVE WORK, making it easy to size down for older girls as well.

It’s essential to note that this skirt should be knitted using 100% cotton yarn paired with a wool or wool blend to maintain the integrity and shape of the knit fabric. If you venture outside of 100% cotton, your results may be unpredictable, and the skirt may stretch out of shape during wear. For best results, we recommend adhering to these fiber recommendations to achieve a durable and beautifully draped skirt.

You will need Worsted Weight 100% cotton (Main Color, MC) in amounts of 400 (450, 500, 550, 600, 650) yards, along with Worsted Weight self-striping wool (Contrast Color, CC) in 320 (360, 400, 440, 480, 520) yards. To help prevent shrinkage and maintain the lifespan of your project, using superwash wool is highly recommended.

The finished skirt size accommodates hip circumferences of 32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52) inches, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe. You will need Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, preferably two 32" circulars (cir), to achieve the best gauge. Be prepared to adjust your needle size if necessary to ensure you meet the required gauge.

Essential notions for this knitting project include a marker (m), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and 1–2 yards of 1" wide elastic for the waistband to ensure a comfortable fit. With a gauge of 21 stitches and 35 rows equaling 4” in the wedge pattern (please refer to the Notes section in the pattern for clarification), you’ll be well on your way to completing this adjustable skirt.
